Caution in Ostrich Bay

January 11, 2005

Local Notice to Mariners advises that unexploded ordnance still lies in Ostrich Bay, particularly in the vicinity of the old ordnance loading pier.

We spoke with the contact person listed in the notice, who told us the ordnance loading site has not been operative for many years, but that old ordnance has been found. No anchoring restrictions have been established, although they're talking it over with the Coast Guard.

Ostrich Bay lies in Dyes Inlet, the body of water behind Bremerton. We have anchored successfully there several times, off the forested city park. It's a delightful spot.
