West Side of Gambier Island

September 23, 2011

Greetings from BC!

Our family has owned recreational property on the West side of Gambier Island since the early 1900s at New Brighton in Thornborough Channel.

The Waggoner Cruising Guide mentions that a store is in operation there. Although it was open for business for a number of years it has now been closed and “for sale” for the last 2 years. We have met quite a few boaters who have stopped in, looking for a meal or groceries, only to be disappointed.

There are good dirt roads for walking to either West Bay or Gambier Harbour (about 1/2 hour each way) but not much else to entice a boater, as the government dock is clogged with small local craft and mooring just isn’t available.

My husband and I cruise the B.C. Coast for most of the summer in our 36 ft Grand Banks (UNICORN V) and the Waggoner is never far from hand!

Regards,
Shannon McJannet

Shannon,

Thank you so much for this information.

I was out on the water for over 78 days this summer. I was in Howe Sound but did not get back to New Brighton. Thank you for this information. We will make the change for the 2012. An article I wrote on Howe Sound is just now appearing in Northwest Yachting Magazine. Luckily it did not cover New Brighton nor use information from the Waggoner Cruising Guide.

Your family property is in a very special place! I will look forward to any updates on the area you can provide.

Regards,
Mark
