Westview Boat Basin Expansion

August 18, 2011

Jim Parsons, the helpful harbor manager at Powell River/Westview, tells us the long-awaited south boat basin expansion is going well. The breakwater has been extended southward, the contract for new floats has been awarded, and electrical is one approval away.

The new floats will be nine feet wide, the main dock will be 12 feet wide. All moorage in the south basin will be side-tie, to bull rails. Power will be 30 amp, except for the end float, which will have some 50 amp power.

The Westview Fuels fuel dock will remain in its present location, protected at last from westerly winds and waves.

Jim couldn’t give a completion date, which might be as late as mid-August. The existing floats are still in use, however, home to an active fish boat fleet. At the very least, moorage space will be as good as in the past.

Powell River/Westview is located on the mainland side of the Strait of Georgia, about 10 miles south of Lund. For boats headed to or from Desolation Sound, it’s a good place to hide out if a storm is tearing the strait to shreds. When the expanded boat basin is fully in service, it’ll be a better provisioning, dining and golf stop, too.
