Too Many Boats in the Broughtons?
March 8, 2006

Bob,

If you were going to make the trip to the Broughton Islands this summer, what would be the best time to go to take advantage of the weather and the crowd -- I understand there can be a lot of boats on the water in the late summer months? At present, we are planning to leave the last week of August.

Rick Cavanaugh

Response

Hi, Rick,

Expect the greatest number of boats from mid-July until mid-August. Things slow down pretty quickly by late August, as fall approaches and the vacation season draws to a close. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble with crowds in late August.

Even at peak times, I wouldn’t worry about crowds in the Broughtons. We’re usually there the third or fourth week of June as we head north, and many of the marinas are still waiting for the rush. Some, such as Lagoon Cove, are packed, but most will welcome any extra boat that comes along. We’ve meandered through the Broughtons in late July on our way home from the north coast and haven’t had any problems. If a marina is full, there’s always good anchorage nearby.

As for weather, you never know. Last year we had day after day of heavy rain until mid-July. Other years it’s been sunny and warm. Some years the wind will start blowing in early August and chase all the boats out. Other years, gorgeous weather. Overall, the best chance for good weather is that mid-July to mid-August window. No guarantees, though.

Bob
