B.C. Sewage Disposal Regs Update
May 30, 2007

Bob,

What's the latest on the new sewage disposal regulations along the B.C. coast?

Richard Cook
Holladay, UT

Response

Hi, Richard,

The regs have been pretty well worked out and are working their way through the final steps of the formal rule-making process before becoming final. If I may summarize, it’s my understanding that as a practical matter, for small craft (meaning boats, not ships) nothing really changes. If a pumpout is available, it should be utilized. If no pumpout is available, discharge should be made while underway in deep water away from shore, so the discharge isn’t concentrated in one place.

My advice to all is “be cool.” Don’t discharge black water in bays or at marinas or around other boats. Use pumpout facilities where they’re available. Where pumpouts aren’t available, discharge where impact is minimal to non-existent. Remember that “the solution to pollution is dilution.” It was a long and difficult battle getting the regs to recognize the special situation in coastal British Columbia. Let’s not give zealots any cause to propose changes.

Regards,
Bob Hale
