Best Time for Waterfalls
September 25, 2007

Bob,

We just finished cruising Desolation Sound and Princess Louisa Inlet. I hear that the waterfalls are spectacular in the spring. Which months would be optimal for this?

Thanks,
John Hollis

Response

Hi, John,

I can't speak from personal experience about Chatterbox Falls, because our visits to Princess Louisa Inlet have been in September.

I think it's safe to say, however, that waterfalls would be the best when we have a combination of heavy rain and active snow melt. That would suggest April, May and June.

The problem with heavy rain is that low clouds or fog can obscure the higher waterfalls, which sort of defeats the objective. What you want is a hot, sunny day today, with heavy rain yesterday. And that sometimes happens.

We never know what to expect in the spring. We cruise north to Prince Rupert in June and July, and we've had wonderful weather and we've had lousy weather. This year (2007) was lousy.

So regardless of how carefully you plan or don't plan, you're still rolling the dice.

Bob Hale
