Hello Bob,

Didn't get a chance to obtain an autographed copy of your guide at the Seattle Boat Show this year. The poor roads (I live in Leavenworth) showed it was not prudent to cross the passes this week, and unfortunately I was unable to go earlier. Next year, I guess.

We have a cabin in Hope, Alaska and have been using the Milepost for many years and would like to let you know, I feel your Waggoners Guide is every bit as good as the Milepost!

Now the reason for this note. I really like your commentary/teaching in the guide regarding anchoring.

My question is, I have a new 22' C-Dory with a 14# Delta, 20' of chain and 200' of 1/2" rope as the primary anchor (yes, I know it's not a Bruce). What would you choose as a secondary anchor?

Thank You, Doug DeVore

Hi, Doug,

Given the heavy snow on the passes you probably were smart not to come to Seattle, but all the other C-Dory owners were there. You have a fine boat and a fine – and enthusiastic – group of fellow owners.

The Milepost was one of the several publishing models I had in mind when I began the Waggoner in 1994. Although the Waggoner is very different from the Milepost, I still look to it for ideas. Another model was my memory of the regular columns and auto tests Tom McCahill wrote in Mechanix Illustrated magazine in the 1940s and 1950s. Tom McCahill, of course, is long gone, as is Mechanix Illustrated. I reread some of McCahill’s articles a couple years ago, however, and my recollections were bang-on. He was great.

For anchors, since the Bruce no longer is being made, the Delta is a very good choice. Your boat is light and doesn’t have much windage; the 14-pound model should be plenty. My backup probably would be another Delta, maybe but not necessarily a size smaller. We carry a 44-pound Bruce on the bow of our Tolly 37 and a 22-pound Bruce as a second, or stern, anchor (in our 10 years with the 37, the smaller Bruce has never been wet). We actually have a third anchor, the 40-pound Danforth the boat came with. Other than rainwater, that anchor has never been wet, either.

Enjoy your C-Dory. All the other C-Brats do.

Regards, Bob Hale Editor/Publisher
