Best Cell Phone and PDA Service for Northwest?
August 7, 2008

H ello Waggoners,

We are long time users of your guidebook and several years ago you wrote an item about cell coverage on the B.C. coast, which contained great information that I had spent years finding out the hard way. We have used Verizon for our cell service for years and have always been able to find somewhere to make a phone call and check our messages, something that we couldn't do during brief stints with other carriers.

I am beginning to hear that people using AT&T are now able to use their cell phones north of Victoria and Vancouver. As my contract with Verizon is coming up for renewal, I was wondering if I have more options now. I spent quite a bit of time browsing your website and the "readers write in" section, but I haven't seen any articles about phone service for some time. I am also considering moving to a PDA device in order to be able to pick up email from my kids and the office without having to go into port, but can't find any information as to whether or not this works for Verizon customers in areas like Desolation Sound.

Do you or your readers have any light to shed on these issues? I feel as though I can't be the only boater who is struggling with this.

Sincerely,
Judy Mundt

Response

Verizon has excellent cell phone coverage in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, and Telus is the phone company for the B.C. coast. Verizon cell phones connect automatically with Telus, so the overall range of service is quite good. Maybe that's why we've had no inquiries lately. But change is constant. Do better alternatives exist? Our readers are a pretty savvy lot. We invite your insights and suggestions.
