Book for Small Boat Cruising
December 9, 2003

I'm kind of embarrassed. In my reply to Earl Sundquist (see "Questions from a New Boater") I said I didn't know of a good book on small boat cruising. Waggoner reader Dave Helland contacted us to tell of a book, and it turns out we've carried it for years. So Duh! on me.

Bob:

A book is out there that might be of value to novice boaters like Mr. Sundquist (Questions from a New Boater, 12/1/03). The book is aimed at those of us in the 20' and under cruising group -- a small but hardy bunch -- and it contains all sorts of good information on boats and motors, trailering, equipment, seamanship and safety, weather, and more. The title is "Outboard Boater's Handbook," edited by David Getchell.

The book was published in 1994, so it is dated in some categories (notably GPS and EPIRBs). But it still has a lot to offer anyone operating a small boat in big water. The publisher is International Marine/McGraw Hill - ISBN 0-07-0239536 , and I'm quite sure it's still in print. If not, I've seen it at HalfPriceBooks in both Everett and the U-District of Seattle.

I spoke to you in your booth at the Seattle Boat Show last year about my experiences boat-camping with a 14-foot center console, and you encouraged me to write something and e-mail it to Waggoner on-line. I could write the better part of a not-very-good book on the subject -- is there anything in particular that might be of value to your readers?

Best regards,
Dave Helland

Response

Thanks for the suggestion. "Outboard Boater's Handbook" is still in print and available, 255pp., index, many photos, $21.95. Our primary business is as a nautical book wholesaler, and several copies are on our shelves. Dealers can order them.

I would enjoy receiving something about cruising in a 14-footer. You know where you've gone and what you've done, so I leave the choice of cruise or subject to you. For guidance, you could read the articles about cruising in the Gulf Islands in a 21-foot boat, or the article about dangerous tide-rips in Rosario Strait.
