MINING SUNKEN SHIPS FOR THEIR CARGO

January 12, 2007. This has nothing to do with coastal cruising in the Pacific Northwest, but our viewers might enjoy clicking on www.subsearesources.com for a look at a British venture that’s mining the cargo of ships sunk as deep as 1000 meters. The company is after only non-ferrous metals, such as copper, zinc, manganese and gold. The ocean floor apparently is littered with sunken ships, especially along busy shipping routes. The cargoes still belong to their last owners, which could be companies, insurers or governments, so Sub Sea Resources must negotiate salvage agreements before proceeding.

It’s interesting if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

This came from an article by S.C. Heal in the January issue of Mariner Life, a British Columbia workboat and waterfront magazine aimed at maritime professionals. When each monthly issue arrives, I find time to read it cover to cover. As our colleague Oscar Lind said after reading one issue, “This is the real thing.” Simon Hill is the editor.
